FULFILLING THE VISION

The White Flint Sector Plan adopted by the County Council envisions transforming the area from a series of strip shopping centers into a dynamic, desirable destination, rich with urban vitality, where residents and visitors can walk to work, shops, restaurants and transit.  One of the keys to this makeover is a new street grid system that will encourage walking, biking and a greater sense of place.  Most of the new grid system of roads will be built out over time, as private development projects move forward, but a few key projects were identified to be funded by a special district transportation tax on properties, and those will be built by Montgomery County. 

 

PHASE ONE – WESTERN WORKAROUND

Starting this November, construction will begin on a critical component of this transformation – the first phase of the Western Workaround road project.   A portion of Executive Boulevard will be realigned and a component of Market/Main Street will be created; work that will take place immediately adjacent to the Montgomery County Conference Center.  This road construction will result in the loss of a number of surface parking spaces at the Conference Center, making the development of a new structured parking garage on the site a necessity. Most of the work in Phase 1 will take place on or adjacent to the Conference Center parking lot and will not affect local traffic, other than single lane closures on Executive Boulevard.  Construction will take approximately 12 to 15 months.

 

NEW CONFERENCE CENTER STRUCTURED GARAGE

The exciting part of this story is that this project will begin the new pedestrian-oriented street grid, and result in a new structured garage behind the Conference Center. This garage will contain a direct weather-protected connection from parking into the Conference Center, better storm water management, and free up land for outdoor use by the Conference Center. 

Garage details:

  • 650 spaces in a 6 story structure designed to blend into the area
  • Direct access from 3rd floor of garage to Ballroom level of Conference Center
  • Bicycle lockers and electric car fueling stations included
  • Entry/Exit points on Executive Boulevard and Market Street

 

CONFERENCE CENTER INTERIM PARKING

During the 12-15 month construction period for the garage, Conference Center guests will need to park at a Marriott-staffed satellite parking lot, 5 minutes away at 6120-6130 Executive Boulevard.

Guests will be transported to the Conference Center every 5 minutes utilizing 35-passenger shuttles and before, during and after all events.  Satellite parking will be clearly marked with “Bethesda North Conference Center” signs, and guests will be driven to the main entrance of the Conference Center at Executive Boulevard and Marinelli Road. Please prepay at the parking kiosks located in the Conference Center before boarding the return shuttle. Please contact the Conference Center for any questions regarding parking.

 

PHASE TWO – WESTERN WORKAROUND

Phase 2 of this project will continue the newly realigned portion of Executive Boulevard through to Old Georgetown Road where it will connect with Grand Park Avenue; the entrance to Pike & Rose.  Also in this phase, the current intersection of Old Georgetown Road and Executive will be reconstructed into a more standard four-way intersection with a direct connection to Towne Road (currently Hoya Street west of Pike & Rose).  Phase 2 will begin after completion of Phase 1, projected to be in 2018.

 

END RESULT

Construction of the Conference Center garage and the adjacent roads is an inconvenience, but will ultimately lead to a connected Pike District community with amenities, options and new ways to get around, in addition to convenient covered parking at the Conference Center.  Please bear with us in working towards the vision of a vibrant, walkable community.
