On behalf of the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT),
We would like to formally invite you to attend the White Flint West Workaround project completion press conference on Thursday, March 9 at 11 a.m. on the corner of Banneker Street and Grand Park Avenue in the Pike District.
The long-planned project managed by MCDOT has transformed the road network in the Pike District into more navigable city blocks. The project provides infrastructure for future growth, supporting the local economy and equitable access to the Pike District area. The project supports County Executive Marc Elrich’s future vision for North Bethesda as a technology corridor and aligns with the Bus Rapid Transit Corridor, known as Flash, that is planned for Rockville Pike/MD 355 just east of the project location.
MCDOT headed up the design, land acquisition, site improvements, utility relocations, and construction management of the project. The development also involved land swaps with the Maryland Department of Transportation allowing the county to advance the work. Construction began in November 2016. Local business communities and advocacy groups were heavily involved in providing valuable feedback for the project throughout the process. Despite the complicated nature of the project, it was delivered on time and on budget.
Specifically, the project realigned the southern portion of Executive Boulevard to connect with Grand Park Avenue, created a new east/west business street, Banneker Avenue (Previously Main and Market Street) adjacent to the Conference Center, continued Towne Road (previously Hoya Road) from Montrose to Old Georgetown Road, and relocated and reconfigured the intersection of Old Georgetown Road and Executive Boulevard. The majority funding source for the $74 million dollar project cost came from White Flint Special Taxing District tax revenues and related special obligation bonds. Capital Improvement Project funding also provided for improvements including shared-use paths, a separated bicycle lane, on-road bicycle lanes, sidewalks, undergrounding of utilities, stormwater management, streetlights and landscape.
Weather permitting, the event will be outdoors with a speaking program followed by a bird’s eye view tour by an MCDOT project engineer from the top of the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center parking garage, located directly behind the press conference location. Free two hour parking is also available in the garage.

We hope you will be able to join us for the announcement of the completion of this project and how it will feed into future plans for the Pike District!
