Q/A with Wendy Brack Fritz, owner of Scout & Molly’s Boutique of North Bethesda
Why did you open Scout & Molly's North Bethesda?
Since opening over seven years ago (2018), our mission has remained the same. Our goal is to create a fun and supportive environment where both our customers and employees enjoy themselves. We strive for customers to find affordable new and unique pieces every week, with the added benefit of personalized assistance from our stylists.
How did you gain the confidence to start your own business and expand it? Was North Bethesda your first store and One Loudoun second?
From my first job as a teen, I learned that strong work ethics lead to success. Opening our first store came with a learning curve, but focusing on our core values and understanding purchasing trends helped us grow. Hiring an incredible team was pivotal. We applied these lessons when expanding to eCommerce and then successfully taking over the One Loudoun location.
What’s your advice to other women entrepreneurs?
Recognize that entrepreneurship requires hard work. Much of our success comes from building a strong in-store team while personally managing critical aspects like the website, buying, payroll, marketing, and inventory. Although outsourcing could lighten the load, it would raise costs for customers. My greatest satisfaction comes from knowing that the long hours I put in behind the scenes help create an affordable and welcoming experience for every customer.
How have your expectations for your business changed since you opened the doors?
Our core mission of offering a complete shopping experience has remained consistent. While we've faced challenges, including navigating the impacts of Covid, each obstacle has strengthened our commitment to supporting women and providing an engaging, welcoming experience.
Does the name have any meaning?
Scout & Molly's is a franchise with independently owned and operated stores. The founder named the store after her two dogs, Scout and Molly. In tribute to that origin, we display a painting of these two adorable dogs behind our point-of-sale counter.
Tell me a bit about your background and how you became interested in opening Scout & Molly's.
After spending over 25 years in the corporate world supporting government entities, I sought a change where I could focus on empowering women. Owning a boutique has allowed me to combine my business skills with a creative outlet, offering the best of both worlds.
