Happy August, Pike District-ers! To many people, August means sunshine and relaxation and a fun end to the warmest season. To parents, though, we know August means one thing. Four words that, when said together, can send a shiver down your spine.

Back to school prep.

Yep. Buckle up, because it’s that time of year again. Get ready for back to school shopping, scheduling, planning…phew! That’s a lot.

But fear not! There is endless fun to be had in the Pike District to parallel the prep. Pike District parents have easy access to family-friendly fun that is sure to make this year’s Summer Vacation end with a bang. We’ve created a list of 10 of our favorite activities in and around the Pike District just for you. So kick back, relax, and let the kiddos enjoy the rest of Summer Vacation!


Kids having fun at The Little Towns Children's Museum

Open Play at The Little Towns Children's Museum - With 16 interactive exhibits, your child is sure to love this hands-on museum! Exhibits, including a grocery store and a fire station, are meant to boost your little ones' imagination and confidence. Walk in or book hour-long sessions here.


Escape Rooms at Escapology - The whole family is in for a treat at Escapology. With various suspenseful and exciting puzzles to choose from, you won't want to leave until you've solved them all! Book your visit here.


Live from the Lawn at Strathmore

Summer at Strathmore - Live from the Lawn is back! Visit Strathmore for a variety of outdoor concerts. All concerts are family-friendly, but some are even just for kids! Check out the lineup here.


Rockville Town Square Splash Pad - Splash pads are truly Summer staples, and the Rockville Town Square Splash Pad is sure to be a hit. Enjoy the splash pad Monday-Saturday from 11:00am-9:00pm and Sunday from 12:00-8:00pm.


Wheaton Train and Carousel - The Train in Wheaton Regional Park is a must for Summer vacationers. It takes riders around a two-mile loop over a bridge and through a tunnel, and wildlife may even make an appearance! And of course, make sure to swing by the Carousel for a fun and nostalgic ride. The Train and Carousel operate on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00am to 6:00pm.


Kayakers at Lake Needwood

Boats and Fishing at Lake Needwood - What better way to bask in the sunshine than on the water? Lake Needwood visitors can rent kayaks, canoes, rowboats, and pedal boats from the Boathouse. And be sure to bring your fishing license when you go, because visitors can also catch fish such as trout, bass, catfish, and more!

Blackberry Picking at Butler's Orchard - Blackberry season is here! We can't think of a better way to enjoy it than by picking your own at Butler's Orchard. Pro tip - use the fresh berries to bake a pie or cobbler. Reserve a time and purchase your tickets here.


Art in the Garden - Flamingo Flamboyance Exhibit at Brookside Gardens - Did you know that a group of flamingos is called a "flamboyance?" This flowery flamingo exhibit will be on display at Brookside Gardens through September. How many flamingos can you spot?
